Setting the Scene

Hypnosis Mic (HypMic for short) is a Japanese multimedia franchise rooted in rap and hip-hop. Originally launched in 2017 as a seiyuu project, it has since then grown to include multiple manga series, stage plays, mobile games, an anime, and a movie alongside its music and drama tracks.

The premise of HypMic is as such: following World War 3, the Japanese government is taken over by the Party of Words, an all women political group who claim they intend to change the world for the better. As part of the Party's new rule, men are declared a lower class than women and made to fight for territory as teams in the Division Rap Battle (DRB). In place of physical violence are Hypnosis Mics, devices created to amplify the power of words—and perhaps even more.

Establishing the Stars

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Izanami Hifumi (CV: Kijima Ryuichi). Second member of Shinjuku Division's Matenrou. Currently 29 years old. Born June 22nd. Works as a host at Fragrance.

Capturing the hearts of women all over the country (and even men!), Hifumi is Shinjuku's number one host—and not for no reason. On top of being handsome, charming, and skilled, he treats every single person with compassion no matter what. Be mindful, though, that his personality changes depending on whether or not he is wearing his suit jacket. While he is caring through and through, Hifumi has a sunny disposition when he is not in host mode. His host's persona was born to deal with his debilitating gynophobia, which he developed due to immense trauma at the hands of Keitoin Honobono. Fortunately, he is able to overcome his fears, although he maintains host mode for the sake of his clients. Regardless of which side you see, he truly has a heart of gold.

Yumeno Gentaro (CV: Saito Soma), or so he is called. His real name is 夢太郎, left in kanji as its reading has yet to be confirmed. Second member of Shibuya Division's Fling Posse. Currently 24 years old. Born April 1st. A novelist.

Despite the dignified air he gives off, Gentaro has a tendency to trick people with his ridiculous tall tales. From princesses to mothers to cats, he can spin stories at the top of his head, though whether his audience is amused or not is another thing. Indeed, the most important thing about Gentaro is that he is a liar—that Yumeno Gentaro is a lie. The real Yumeno Gentaro is his brother, a whistleblower whom the Party of Words sent into a coma, and our Gentaro has taken on his brother's identity in order to avenge him. While his character may be founded on falsehoods and all the struggles that a lack of self-identity entails, the bonds he makes are true. Even after his brother awakens, he chooses to keep fighting as Yumeno Gentaro thanks to Fling Posse. He would do anything for his loved ones, after all.

Golden Rose Shrine

With the setting and stars established, this shrine is thus dedicated to Hifumi and Gentaro as a ship (known as HifuGen). I love many ships, but HifuGen in particular holds a special place in my heart for how much they've pushed me as a creative. Back in late 2018, I started writing Rumor Has It as a means to explore Gentaro's character against someone who invokes a different side of him—and now here we are at 37 fics and counting, numerous fanarts, and studying Japanese more seriously to read doujin and fics! My love for HifuGen has manifested in so many different ways, and this shrine is just one of them.

While Golden Rose Shrine was created in my vision, any and all portrayals of HifuGen are welcome! HifuGen's canon interactions may be few, but there's so much you can do with them. For each and every one of us who enjoys HifuGen, there is another interpretation, and I think that's to be celebrated. So please, if you have anything that you think could be featured here, feel free to send it my way!
